PACE was involved in replacing the 1965 southbound I-5 Puyallup River Bridge with a new, seismically updated structure that is straighter and wider. The project also included modifying the Port of Tacoma Road on-ramp to southbound I-5, demolishing and rebuilding the East L Street overpass, and replacing concrete pavement from McKinley Avenue to Portland Avenue. Additional improvements encompassed upgrades to signage, lighting, stormwater collection, and water quality treatment facilities.
The project aims to improve traffic flow by adding a southbound high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane as part of a larger plan to introduce HOV lanes on I-5 between SR 16 in Tacoma and Fife. This included building a new southbound bridge over the Puyallup River, widening and replacing mainline pavement, demolishing old bridges, and repaving various ramps. The project also involved installing new infrastructure such as lighting, intelligent transportation systems (ITS), signage, barriers, retaining walls, and a new L Street bridge.
PACE provided comprehensive drainage design, including various collection and conveyance systems such as ditches, enclosed drainage, curb and gutter, and catch basins. Advanced water-quality treatment facilities, including media filter drains, constructed stormwater treatment wetlands, wet biofiltration swales, and connections to the McKinley biofiltration swale, were also implemented. These efforts aimed to complete the HOV system in the area, improving transportation efficiency and safety.
